Hi Andy,
good salary would be the one that is at least covering your expences.-)
lets say renting the flat in warsaw starting from 1000 PLN to 2000( center of the city)
food again up to your appetite 800 PLN, so not adding anything else, you need to have at least 3000 PLN netto per month, but i would say 4000-5000 netto is better:)

I would say it depends on what comfortable means for you and on your lifestyle. If you don't have a family to support and you are not a big spender (buy lots of clothes, etc), then I agree with Ola that 3000 PLN net is enough for one person to live comfortably enough, go out once in a while, eat out once in a while, take taxis once in a while and not save much.

You would need at least 1000 for rent in a decent location (close to the city center) - this will get you a small and not very new apartment or something to share.

If comfortable means having a nice car, an apartment in a new building , not having a flatmate and lots of sushi instad of kebabs then you can double that.

thanks for your inputs. Actually here what I am really lookin for-

I'll be wrking for abt a year in warsaw...coming there in Aug this year...I am in the process of doing salary negotiations with my employers and trying to find a good salary The salary shld be able to cover the expenses easily (ensuring good coverage of expenses rather than being extravagant :)

Right now it seems ill be staying alone there....my office is located in Emilii Plater 53. How much should I be able to rent a decent accomodation round that place (per month)? I dont cook so more often than not i'll end up havin food from outside. How much would it cost me if i have food out daily (mixture of sushi and kebabs :)(per month)? I would travel by local transport daily. Any estimate of this(per month)? How much would a pub visit cost me (per visit)?

Pls feel free to add any expense category I might be missing. Thanks!

Hi Andy,

Here's a breakdown of some common expenses (a little on the high side). I'll leave the math to you :-)
Decent accomodation (close to the center - Emilii Plater is in the center): at least 1500 zloty per month. + utilities (about 100 per month).
Internet + cable + landline: 200 zloty per month (if you plan to have any of these)
mobile phone: about 100 per month (prepaid)
Fast food menu: 12 zloty
Kebab: 8 zloty
ok meal including a beer: about 50 zloty
nice meal with a glass of wine (one person): 70-100 zloty
Monthly public transport pass (valid on trams buses and the metro): 70 zloty
Beer at a bar: between 8 and 12 zloty depending on the bar.
Taxi at night from "party zone" to the center: about 20 - 25 zloty
Haircut: 30 - 50 zloty
One hour pass to a good swimming pool: 10-20 zloty
Train ticket to Krakow (return): 150 zloty
Ticket to a decent concert (foreign band): 100 - 150 zloty
Cover charge to night club: 10 - 20 zloty
Shot of vodka/tequila at a bar: 15 zloty
Weekly shopping (cleaning stuff, toilet paper, deodorant, corn flakes, etc....): 100 zloty

May I ask what kind of job/industry this is? It might help us give you an idea of the kind of salary you can expect to earn.

Good luck in your negotiations!

Thanks for the details...this is helping me a lot... :) Just as a background - I'll be working with a company in real estate industry in warsaw on a project for them for a year. I am wrking for an outsourcing company, with the warsaw company being its major customer. The process works in a way that my company is charging some money from its customer (the warsaw company) and inturn I would be given a % of that for my services. So the salary would not be the same as that of an emloyee of the warsaw company would be getting. Also I have over 5 years of experience in financial services indusry.

As a follow-up I have these questions:

1)whats the best way to get a house round emilii center...can u refer some good sites faciliating direct contact wih the landlords (like gumtree...but I guess Gumtree is in the local language only. Right?)? {Somehow I havent been able to find some sites like this. Whatever I have got till now have been asking for almost double the price what you have given (1500 PLN)!}

2)how much would a car rent cost me (mid size car) for a month and also the petrol cost?

Ok, since you won't be here teaching English or something along those lines you probably will be looking for a higher standard of accomodation. That's why I emphasized "at least" in my apartment rental estimate. A good online service is www.oferty.net -- but it's all in Polish. As far as i know, there are no online real estate portals in English (besides the ones from the agencies). There are no houses in the center of Warsaw, only apartments - houses anywhere near the center are very expensive (at least 8000 zloty per month).

I have no idea how much a rental car would cost (we have all the major companies so maybe on their website?) but gasoline is about 4.50 zloty per liter.
