If you have a residence card - everything becomes so much more easier. My favorite bank then would be Multibank on ul. Emilii Plater - opposite to Mariot Hotel. Ask me why.

However, the most interesting question is how and where to open an account without residence card. I know it is possible. But since personnaly I have not done that, the question is: HOW TO DO IT? Any personal experience here?

So I ask you: why is multibank opposite the Marriot hotel so good?
I managed to open a bank account in Millenium with just my passport but that was a few years ago....and I'm not an EU citizen. I guess it just depends on the bank. For example: they wouldn't give me a credit card without a permanent residence card but I know in Citibank you could get one no problem.

First about credit cards.
Citibank is very, very pushy selling its credit cards. But then speak to the clients of Citibank. Personnally, I have very bad experience with them. I also know at least 2 other persons who had very bad experience with Citybank in Poland. Not going into details, if you decide to open account with them - expect that everything will be all right with usual daly service. However, if you will get any problem - wish u good luck trying to resolve it. And another advice - do not beleive their advertising.

With majority of other banks - to receive a credit card is quite difficult, unless you have stable job, prefferably with permanent contract. Which makes sense both for u and for the bank.

About the first question. I like Multibank because this is a small bank (so u can expect understanding from them of the needs of the small cleint), which is a part of the big bank (BRE), which gives A) product range wider than most other small banks have (including professional electronic banking, investment funds, etc., etc.) and B) competitive fees (which is important, when you are dealing with a brick-and-mortar bank).
However, as with any other bank, a lot of customer satisfaction depends on the level of service that a particular bank has. If in case of the large corporations customer service depends also on the corporate culture (for example in PKO BP /where I also have an account/ you can generally expect polite and farily professional service and long wating lines), then in small banks its more tricky. This is because a lot of them work as franchises, which means that professionalism and customer orientation do not come naturally. Again, personally, I dealt with two offices of Multibank - one in Arkadia mall and another one - opposite to Mariott hotel. If in first case I was not impressed with the service at all - it took them 30 minutes to do the most simple thing, than in latter case the service is constantly very good (like opening of the account took 5 minutes, the same with making ammendments to the agreement, etc., etc.).
Having said that, I admit that other people can have different experiences with those (or other for that matter) banks, and one should always try different banks/branches and to find the bank that sutes him/herself the best. If you read polish, you can check the appropriate forum on gazeta.pl.

How do you choose a bank?

For example if I see that there is a new bank opened in Warsaw, and they don't take commission for taking cash out of the ATM, and these rules works for any ATM.
These can be a 20-30 PLN savings, if you take cash 4-6 times a month.
