HI, I am new in town:)
what are the options for a health insurance in Poland? How does it work? Are there any alternatives that you can recommend to the state insurance (ZUS)?

I am afraid, there are NO alternatives to ZUS

ZUS's fee is is payed by your employer, or by you if you are self employed.

So every month you are obliged to pay some amount to ZUS in exchange for a free medical services you can get in any state hospital.

But you can also buy private insurance. Companies like Uniqa and Sigma have private health insurance plans for individuals and families. But if you are working, you still have to pay ZUS as Nico said.
